Episode #002: Quickfire Questions: We answer a book tag!

Grab a cuppa, shut up, and sit down. Welcome to Rants and Reviews, a seasonal podcast in which Anjali and Sophie chat about all things books.

In this week’s episode, we ask each other 19 bookish questions so you get to know us a little better. Shout out to Buydebook’s book tag on the Readaholic’s discussion feed on Goodreads for these great questions.

THE MAIN FEATURE

Sophie and Anjali alternate asking and answering the questions, while also adding in a few of their own along the way. We’ve included brief, sometimes vague answers here in the show notes; to get the full response you’ll have to take a listen!

(00:28) How many books is too many books in a book series?
Sophie: It definitely depends on the story…

(01:30) How do you feel about cliffhangers?
Anjali: If they’re done well, then Anjali is all for it, but only if she has the next book already in hand.
The discussion takes a side step for a moment into what would happen if a book ended on a cliffhanger, but the author never released the following book? What would we do? How do we finish the story?

(03:50) Hard copy or paperback?
Sophie: As much as hard copies are so pretty, with their beautiful covers, it’s gotta be a paperback.

(04:40) Favourite book?
Anjali: If you check out Episode #003 you’ll discover that Anjali actually changes her answer to this question slightly! Stay tuned!

(05:20) Least favourite book?
Sophie: Sophie was not looking forward to this question, and can’t think of any at the top of her head. But there are some books she hasn’t finished …

(06:48)Love triangles, yes or no?
Anjali: Much like the cliffhanger question, if it’s done well or with a twist, then Anjali is okay with them.

(08:55) What is the most recent book you just couldn’t finish?
Sophie: From Twinkle, With Love, by Sandhya Menon, but what was it about this book that Sophie didn’t like?

(10:16) A book you’re currently reading?
Anjali: Anjali recently picked up Grace and Fury, by Tracy Banghart and Mythos by Stephen Fry.
[Post-recording note: We chat about Grace and Fury in Episode #001 - did you catch what Anjali thought of the book?]

(12.53) Last book you recommended to someone?
Sophie: Sophie has been telling a lot of people to read Mythos by Stephen Fry.  She’s on a real Greek buzz right now, and has been writing a lot of Greek-related book reviews on Blogger’s Bookshelf and on Sofilly.com.

(17:10) Oldest book you’ve read? (Publication date)
Anjali: Thanks to a search on Goodreads, the oldest book Anjali’s read was written in 420 BC.

(18.09) Newest book you’ve read? (Publication date)
Sophie: She’s literally just about to pick up a new release: Early Riser by Jasper Fforde.

(18:50) Favourite author?
Anjali: Too many to choose from! But she suggests a couple that would be in her top 5.

(20.50) Buying books or borrowing books?
Sophie: While she’s not against borrowing books, Sophie prefers to buy them, because then she can read them any time she likes.
Anjali chimes in that we should refer to her recent post on This Splendid Shambles about Reading Through the Years if we want to find out about her thoughts on this.

(23:46) A book you dislike that everyone else seem to love?
Anjali: A very controversial pick!

(25:08) Bookmarks or dog-ears?
Sophie: Literally whatever is on hand at the time will be use as a page-saver.
Anjali never uses a bookmark; find out what her page-saving system is!

(27:24) A book you can always reread?
Anjali: One series that Anjali can always reread has a rather lucky story attached to it.

(30:40) Can you read while hearing music?
Sophie: So … can she? Of course!

(31:30) One POV or multiple POV’s? (POV’s = Point of views)
Anjali: The confusion of too many POVs is enough to bring the ‘single POV’ into first place.
Sophie tells us about Little Fires Everywhere, which has POVs from everyone in a family, and the interesting way that the author, Celeste Ng, writes that. You can check out the review of the book on her blog.

(34.10) Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days?
Sophie: ‘Who has time for one sitting?!’ says Sophie. But does Anjali agree?
