Episode #005 | Overseas Opinions: Guests Erin and Ria share their favourite books

Episode 5 of Rants and Reviews is a guest episode. We're talking to Erin from A Natural Detour, and Ria from Thoroughly Modern Millennial about their favourite books. - Lettering Overseas Opinions

(0:00) Welcome to another episode of Rants and Reviews. Are you sick of our voices yet? Well don’t you worry, we have two special guests with us this episode, so you don’t have to just listen to us. Erin and Ria are fellow book lovers and internet friends of ours. Once we got past the technical difficulties we had a lot of fun. Stay tuned to see how it went!

(0:40) Ria blogs at Thoroughly Modern Millennial and is a co-creator of Blogger’s Bookshelf.

(0:59) Erin blogs at A Natural Detour, as well as co-running Blogger’s Bookshelf.

CURRENTLY READING

Each episode we’re going to be sharing what we’re currently reading, so you can discover our favourite genes, add some books to your TBR pile, and hear us rave and rage about characters, plot, setting and more.

Ria is in book-limbo but has recently finished reading Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson, and This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay.

Erin is currently reading Vox by Christina Delcher, This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare by Gabourey Sidiby.

Sophie is currently reading When in Rome by Nicky Pellegrino, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (audiobook), and The House of Hades by Rick Riordan.

Anjali is currently reading The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell.

MAIN FEATURE

(12:24) Erin and Ria chat to us about their personal blogs. Erin tells us that A Natural Detour is a lifestyle blog, and she mostly blogs about TV, music, books, and roundups, with the occasional food post thrown in.

(14:00) Ria says that Thoroughly Modern Millennial started as a fashion blog (under a different name), and it eventually morphed into a ‘monster of everything else’. These days she writes about lifestyle, travel, and more recently about race and politics.

(15:15) We agree finding time to blog is often a struggle.

(15:25) Do you know how many drafts we have in our blog drafts folder?!

(16:05) Anjali asks about Erin and Ria’s blogs and what their favourite things about blogging are, and why they do it.

(16:16) The community is one of Ria’s favourite things about blogging, as well as writing, and ranting about the big things that happen around the world.

(16:45) ‘Just to like, butt in!’ says Sophie. She tells us how many drafts she has after her blog post clear out. You might be shocked at the number!

(17:46) We chat about Erin and Ria’s favourite types of post to write about, seeing as they’ve both written about a range of topics.

(19:30) Ria reminisces about the days she wrote about fashion collections, and Anjali jumps in and says that she used to just wait until Ria posted about fashion-heavy events like the Oscars so she could see all the dresses rather than watch them on TV.

(21:30) Any one a beauty blogger out there? We spend too much time chatting about beauty blogging and the quirks that come with it.

(23:10) Finally, to the main reason we’re chatting! Our guests’ favourite books!

(23:20) Erin’s has picked one all-time favourite book, and a recent favourite. Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas is her favourite, and she’s read it four times!

(26:40) Ria has a list of ‘forever favourites’, books she’ll love forever, one of which is Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. She spends some time telling us why she loves it.

(30:15) Ria’s second choice, and her more recent favourite, is The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas. There’s a movie adaptation of The Hate U Give being released in 2018, and we spend a good few minutes talking about how awesome KJ Apa is (he’s in the movie).

(34:12) Erin ends the episode by telling us about her second choice which is a book she only read recently: Girl in Translation, by Jean Kwok. She’s given it 5-stars!
