Instagram's Redesign // Opinions

Monday, 16 May 2016

Okay so unless you've been hiding under a rock, or don't get around the internet much, you may have noticed that Instagram had a little make over last Thursday. Instagram launched it's new design saying "it's inspired by you [the users]... the simpler design puts more focus on your photos and videos without changing how you navigate the app." However it's received a lot of backlash on pretty much every part of it's new design.

The thing is though while the actual camera design is simpler the bright gradient colour (meant to represent that iconic perfect sunset photo every Instagrammer tries to find) is so much more in your face. The older design, in my opinion, was much less in your face and left our photos to have the focus but I guess that quote is probably more about the interface than the icon. They've also changed all their secondary apps to have some consistency across the board which is great. But while it may actually have a great rationale for the way it looks, a lot of memes have been racing around the internet about it's similarity to the default background gradient on Powerpoint. Let's face it, it does actually look very similar. I mean like anyone could've made this.

We had a discussion in class on the launch day, as ya know that's what designers do all day - discuss other designers work. But a point was made about how now they've changed the icon design a lot of design across the internet will now have to change to keep with the existing design. For example hello all you blog people with social media buttons, including myself, you're now out of date!

So while the outside has had a colourful redesign, the inside has had the opposite. Anything that made it look any different to other apps has now gone and been exchanged for white. I mean I didn't mind the whiteness of the main part of the app but now the font colour is darker and the rest of the app is white it seems a bit black and white and meh to be honest. I liked the blue text and the darker navigation bars. The photos now are the only colour on the app and stand out so much they almost feel like a slap in the face.

I'm not actually too fussed either way about the new design. I do prefer the old design but this design is just new with a few problems and I guess once you get down the the bottom of it all, no matter how much backlash and how many memes travels around the internet, we're all just going to get used to it. I mean remember how much backlash the non chronological feed got and while there's still a bit around, and we're all still kinda hating on it, but we've just accepted it.

How do you feel about the new design?
